Up until her sixteenth birthday, Chloe King was fairly normal. At least as normal as you can get when you've no idea who your biological parents are and were sort of adopted (there may have been some technical.. legal issues. Chloe doesn't ask.) at a tender age by a reporter and his wife, taken from Ukraine, and placed in a lovely family home in San Francisco, California. Maybe not a tender age, actually. Chloe doesn't actually remember anything from before she was adopted.

And the reason she doesn't remember may or may not have something to do with the fact she's Mai, a descendant of the ancient Egyptian cat-goddess Bastet. Her powers lie dormant until her sixteenth birthday, when her entire world starts to go topsy-turvy. And it's not like she's just a descendant of an ancient race, either. Oh no, she has to be the savior. Proved to have nine lives, she's told by the Mai leader in the city that she is "The Uniter".

Chloe is told it is her destiny, that it has been prophesied that she will save the world and both the Mai and the Human races, and stop their war. Her life is no longer her own, she's warned. And there are so many rules. And bodyguards. And Chloe is sixteen. And would really like to be allowed to live her life the way she wants to, which means occasionally breaking some of those "rules". And, hey, she may not be the Uniter they wanted, but she's the Uniter they got. Not like they can go out and find another one.
