Name: Chloe King, the Uniter
Canon: The Nine Lives of Chloe King (TV Series)

History:
The first thing you need to know about Chloe and Chloe's world is the existence of Mai, a race descended from the ancient Egyptian cat-goddess Bastet. They look human, and in modern times live secretly among them, although thousands of years ago they shared a special bond with humans, even guarded and advised them. Eventually the Mai came to resent how they were treated, like servants, and broke apart from the humans. Many humans, in turn, came to the belief that the Mai were a danger to them. That's when The Order was created, an organization dedicated to exterminating the Mai.
Among the Mai, there is a legend that also dates back thousands of years, about the coming of the Uniter. "Nine lives to live, nine lives to endure, nine lives to accomplish much, but each life more complicated than the last, and each death more painful than the one before." The Uniter is meant to save the Mai, bring them back together again after having been scattered and slaughtered, warring among themselves and against humans. Chloe, though she does not know it in the beginning, is the Uniter.
Chloe is orphaned at the age of two, the sole survivor of one of these slaughters carried out by the Order. She is found in an orphanage in Ukraine by a journalist (Johnathan King) who takes her back home with him to San Francisco, to live a relatively normal life with him and his wife (Meredith King). She knows nothing of her Mai heritage during her childhood, or even of their existence. Sometime during her childhood, she formed a long-lasting friendship with her now BFFs Amy and Paul. At the age of six, Johnathan leaves Chloe and Meredith with no explanation and seemingly disappears.
The eve of her sixteenth birthday is when things began to change.
Point in canon: A few minutes after episode six, "Nothing Compares 2 U". Brian tells Chloe he's falling in love with her, she tells him that she can't see him anymore, and runs off in tears. To avoid Brian following her, she takes a somewhat roundabout way home, through an alley, and that's where she finds the window. I will likely be following the canon events of the series with her.

Universe: In most aspects, today's modern world, though there are species called Mai and Jackal living in secret among humans. They are descendants of the ancient Greek goddess and god Bastet and Anubis, respectively.
Abilities: Mai powers include superhuman agility and reflexes, extendable claws (nails grow), advanced jumping height, an ability to balance oneself on quite narrow paths (or ledges, or beams), will always land on their feet (mostly), night vision, and an ability to "tune-in" to sounds from a distance. Since Chloe is also the Uniter, in addition to the ordinary Mai powers, she also has nine lives to live (or to "endure"), and has a unique empath ability. She cannot control this ability yet, it comes on without warning, but on occasion she can feel exactly what a human (or, given canon evidence where it happened with a Jackal, possibly any other species besides the Mai) is feeling. Usually this happens with a direct look, and at close proximity.
Possessions: Chloe arrives with the dress on her back and a clutch purse with her iPhone inside.

Why this form: Chloe is Mai, a descendant of the Ancient Greek cat-goddess Bastet, who is often depicted as a lioness. The Barbary lion is a subspecies of lion that became extinct in the 20th century, and its former habitat range was in North Africa encompassing the region from Morocco to Egypt. Since Chloe is also the Uniter, she is unique even to her own species, so that was another reason to choose a currently extinct subspecies of lion.
